2101 Connecticut Avenue is a historic residential building located in the heart of Washington DC's vibrant Kalorama neighborhood. Named for its street address at 2101 Connecticut Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20008, this is one of the most magnificent residential buildings in a neighborhood that has long been celebrated for its grand old structures. Featured in James Goode's notable "Best Addresses" book, the imposing edifice is one of just a handful of co-ops in the area. Most of the other nearby grand dame structures, such as The Dresden, 2029 Connecticut, and The Carthage, are now luxury condominiums. The affluent Kalorama neighborhood has long been home to storied architecture as well as Washington political and business leaders. Indeed, this prominent building has itself been inhabited by a Vice-President of the United States, as well as numerous United States Senators, Representatives, Supreme Court Justices, Admirals, Generals, and diplomats.

Traditional and Modern Features at 2101 Connecticut Avenue

Developed by Harry Bralove and designed by the team of Joseph Abel and George Santmyers, 2101 Connecticut Ave was known at the time of its completion in 1928 simply as “2101.” The looming walls and stark right angles of the building were inspired by The Shelton in New York City. Apartment rentals at 2101 started at $175 per month back in the day, and it was advertised in the Washington Post as “Washington’s Most Distinctive Apartment.” With recent sales at this address routinely topping a million dollars, it is safe to say the prices have certainly changed since the 1920s.

The footprint of 2101 Connecticut Avenue is larger than some of the neighboring buildings, and that has manifested in a greater number of apartments and very spacious floorplans that typically range from 2,600 to 3,200 square feet. There are exceptions, such as select upper floor units that have been combined in order to make supersized, two-level penthouses. Many of the apartments had staff quarters when the building was initially introduced. The original cost of construction was a reported $2 million, a princely sum at the time. It was the end of the Roaring Twenties and a time of rapidly rising interest rates, just prior to the Great Depression. The massive development boom in Washington, DC was quickly slowing down. There was a sense of public unease with causes ranging from a smallpox epidemic to shifting world politics and wars.

While Washington, DC is well known for historic Victorian designs, along with subsets such as Beaux Arts, the massive castle-like appearance of 2101 Connecticut Avenue has been described as a mixture of Gothic and Moorish Revival influences. One of the more unusual aspects of the building’s design is a series of five-foot-tall terracotta gargoyles along the roofline, holding boulders above their heads. The developer described them as protective guardians, intended to reassure residents or prospective residents. Other extraordinary architectural details include huge archways, sculpted parrots, lion heads, griffins, and even pineapples.

Stepping inside the spacious cooperative residences, the sense of remodeled grandeur is evident. Foyers and extended galleries typically serve as introductions to the spacious layouts, with inlaid herringbone floor accents, plaster moldings, large window bays and wainscoting, merging with more modern renovations. Ornate stone fireplaces are not unusual, and kitchens have often been opened up to offer an airier flow. The building’s lobby is jaw-dropping, with soaring 16-foot ceilings adorned with exquisite relief, and marble floors. There is a staffed front desk, concierge service, a roof deck with expansive views, a fitness center, dry-cleaning, and both garage and surface parking. The Best Addresses property is prominently located in the Kalorama Triangle Historic District, close to parks and the Rock Creek  Trail.
