Modern Condo Features at the Historic Car Barn

The Car Barn is one of Washington's most unique landmark residential communities, combining a fascinating historic backstory with modern lifestyle finishes and features. Delivered in 1896, the expansive property that runs along East Capitol, 14th, A, and 15th Streets, was used for administrative offices, and for the maintenance and storage of streetcars, as well as their conversion from horse-drawn to electric power. The site transitioned to bus storage in the early 1960s and was ultimately converted to condominium residences. This most recent chapter in a storied history took a lengthy period of time and was completed in stages, ending around 2005. The Car Barn’s buildings are quite distinctive, with multiple blocky turrets as well as several cavernous archways that were once entrances for streetcars, heavy machinery, and even horses. Other interesting condominium developers in the area include the C&P Telephone Company, Carolina on the Hill, and the Carbery School Lofts.

The Car Barn condo conversion process was long and arduous, but the end result was quite striking. Residences come in a variety of shapes and sizes, ranging from one-bedroom flats to two and three-bedroom townhouse-style models. Square footage is generally from around 679 to 1,560. Wood-burning fireplaces are common, even in smaller units. Hardwood floors, high ceilings, oversized windows, and well-appointed kitchens with stone counters and stainless steel appliances help add to the appeal. The bathrooms are quite attractive, and there are also walk-in closets, in-unit washers and dryers, extra storage, and parking. The gated community features quaint walkways between the buildings and wings, lovely landscaping and courtyards, bike storage, and a swimming pool.

The location is another selling point, about a block from Lincoln Park, and an easy distance to local coffeeshops, bakeries and restaurants such as Pacci’s, The Hill Café, Capitol Square Bar & Grill, and the Pretzel Bakery. The Car Barn is in the eastern part of the Capitol Hill neighborhood, and close to Anacostia Park, the Anacostia River, RFK Stadium, and the Stadium-Armory Metro station. It’s an area that is seeing a lot of new development and attractions, such as the Navy Yard to the south, Nationals Park, the Yards Park, and waterfront restaurants and entertainment.
