More About the City of Alexandria, VA

Living in the City of Alexandria means having lots of choices. It starts with home types, from large estates with lush landscaping to modernist flats in full-service waterfront condo communities. You also get to choose your immediate environment, from quiet neighborhoods with leafy small town appeal to urban corridors loaded with a vibrant cosmopolitan energy. The restaurant scene in Alexandria is world famous, as is the shopping. King Street in Old Town brings it all together with upscale designer boutiques, sidewalk cafes, art galleries, and the free King Street Trolley.

Alexandria’s history dates to 1749, and it was incorporated thirty years later. Originally a tobacco trading post and one of the busiest ports in the nation, the city was ceded to the new Federal District in 1789 and was retroceded back to Virginia in 1847. It was marred by conflict during the Civil War and went through a new period of residential development and neighborhood expansions during the turn of the 20th century, aided by the arrival of electric streetcars that made it easier to commute to other communities in the region, including Washington, DC.

Today, public transit continues to be a strong factor for those living in the City of Alexandria. Metrorail stations in Old Town include King Street, Braddock Road, and the new Potomac Yard station currently under construction. Other Metro stations include Van Dorn, Eisenhower Avenue, Huntington, Crystal City, and Pentagon City. Driving is also a convenient means for commuters, with the I-395 leading into the heart of Washington, DC and the I-495 Capital Beltway heading into Maryland. With parks, highly rated schools, quaint farmers markets, and a thriving arts and culture scene, Alexandria and its various neighborhoods are among America’s top places to live.

The City of Alexandria has a smaller geographical footprint than the greater Alexandria area, but it’s sizeable, nonetheless. Within the city are numerous unique neighborhoods, with the crown jewel being Old Town Alexandria. As the historic seat of the city, Old Town is one of the country’s most popular destination places for visitors, as well as a highly sought-after area to live with luxury real estate ranging from centuries-old rowhouses to new waterfront condos. Del Ray is another favorite neighborhood for prospective home shoppers with its charming Victorian bungalows and “Main Street” shops and restaurants. One of the most ambitious mixed-use communities in recent memory is Potomac Yard, a former railway switching yard that is now home to impressive upscale townhomes, condos, shops, and entertainment. Rosemont is known for its gracious older homes, while the Carlyle District and Eisenhower East are notable for their rapid development and luxury high-rise condominiums.
