Modern Condo Features at Cooper Lewis

The mixed-use Cooper Lewis building has street level commercial space with condo residences on levels two through six. When the project was being planned by CallisonRTKL Architects and the developer, Metropolis, a decision was made to go with fewer condos and larger floorplans. The result was just 18 two and three-bedroom residences ranging from around 1,200 to 2,500 square feet. Duplex penthouses at the top levels have twisting, floating stairs and private roof decks. The location is also key, with top restaurants, boutique retailers, and other attractions in every direction.

Cooper Lewis gets its name from a Washington, DC pharmacist named Dr. Samuel Lewis who commissioned the original structure from architect Paul Pelz in 1897. The Pelz Building was leased to Edward and Jennie Cooper in 1925, and the couple would operate their popular Cooper Hardware Store here until the mid-1970s. But all things change in time, and Logan Circle has been at the forefront of intriguing redevelopment and revitalization for some time now. The property’s rebuild meant losing portions of the original structure and adding onto the core in dramatic fashion. But some vintage elements remain, including interior exposed brick walls and accents. Other features include white oak hardwood floors, towering windows, high ceilings, and phenomenal open gourmet kitchens with stone counters, Scavolini cabinetry, and high end Kitchen Aide appliance packages. Most units have outdoor spaces, and two-level layouts are not uncommon, even with lower level residences.

The few and fortunate who manage to land a condo at Cooper Lewis enjoy secure parking, and extra storage. The corner of P and 14th Street in Logan takes a back seat to no one in the neighborhood’s modern era, with a dizzying array of stores, bars, restaurants, and other hot spots, and an eye-popping juxtaposition of historic storefronts and new modernist designs. Local eateries include Le Diplomate, Chicken + Whiskey, Shake Shack, Logan Tavern, Milk Bar, Stoney’s on P Street, Vin Sur Vingt Wine Bar, and so many others. Whole Foods is right across the street, the famed Logan Circle roundabout with its inner grassy park is a block away, and Downtown DC is next-door to the south.
