Named for a prominent lawyer and president of the board of commissioners for Washington, DC, the James B. Edmonds Elementary School was designed by the architectural firm of Marsh & Peter in 1902 and completed in 1903 through the Pavarini & Greer construction company. It transitioned into the Peabody-Edmonds School in the 1950s and was eventually owned by the DC Teachers Federal Credit Union, before being vacated. Ditto Residential in partnership with CAS Reigler took the property over, working closely with DC’s Historic Preservation Office in order to maintain the building’s integrity. The project was completed in 2014. Other schoolhouse condominium developments in the area include the Carbery School Lofts, and the Lennox School Lofts.

More About the Edmonds School, Washington, DC

The Edmonds School condominium is located on a residential street dotted with leafy trees and lined with lovely old rowhouses. Collaborating with architectural historians from the preservation office, the developers were able to retain much of the old schoolhouse’s original charm and character. Condo floorplans range from studio to two-bedroom, and each unit is unique. Rustic exposed brick walls are combined with high ceilings and other intriguing architectural details. Some units have original brick interior archways and/or exposed ceiling beams. Where attics once existed, some upper level units now feature dramatic lofted ceilings. The Euro-style gourmet kitchens are stunning and open, with stone counters, custom cabinetry, and Bosch appliances. The bathrooms are equally notable with WaterWorks fixtures and frameless showers.

The main schoolhouse building has a street address of 901 D Street NE with entrances on both D and 9th Streets. The adjoining townhouses are along 9th Street, with their own individual addresses. These four-level residences look like classic, vintage rowhouses from the street, but are new construction residences with appealing layouts, front bays, modern kitchens, fireplaces, and private rooftop decks. Virtually all units at the Edmonds School have some sort of outdoor space, and parking is also available. The schoolhouse has an intriguing roof deck that is on top of the car port, with wooden flooring, lounge furniture, and a gas grill. There is also extra storage, bike racks, and lovely grass areas. The Edmonds School is close to Stanton Park, and walking distance to the Union Station Metro. Jacob’s Coffee House, Bistro Cacao, Union Pub, Nostra Cucina, and the Capitol Hill Super Market are all nearby.
