In fact, modernism itself has been around since the 1920s, with the celebrated mid-century modern movement commencing in the 1950s. These days, notable modern and contemporary architects continue to create and innovate, and the style is more popularly embraced than ever before.

Built by Frank Lloyd Wright in Falls Church, the Pope-Leighey House is one of the earliest modernist single-family homes in the area.
There were also notable instances of neoclassicism in Federal government buildings during the 1930s. Charles M. Goodman, one of the government’s mainstay architects for the Public Buildings Commission during this period ultimately became much more celebrated for his role in what is now known as mid-century modern design. Goodman was the guiding force behind Hollin Hills in southern Alexandria, perhaps the region’s most famous mid-century modern neighborhoods with some 468 iconic houses sporting low-slung roofs, wide overhangs, and enormous walls of windows.
Hollin Hills is hardly the only community in Washington Metro devoted to modernist ideals. During a heady post-World War II period from about 1950 to the late 1960s, numerous groundbreaking developments took shape. A sampling of mid-century modern neighborhoods from this period would include Wessynton near Mount Vernon in Alexandria, Holmes Run Acres in Falls Church, Lake Barcroft in Fairfax County, Carderock Springs in Bethesda, Maryland, as well as Hammond Wood, Hammond Hill, and Rock Creek Woods in Montgomery County.
Moving ahead to the present day, modern and contemporary luxury homes are very much in vogue in the Washington Metro area. Modernism has always emphasized a connection to nature, and the region’s plentiful greenspaces provide organic settings for new or rebuilt homes. It is not uncommon to find cutting edge designs in neighborhoods bordering Rock Creek Park in DC, for instance. Architects that are in high demand in the Washington area include Robert Gurney, Travis Pierce, Mark McInturff, David Jameson, Hugh Jacobsen, Douglas Soe Lin, and Alan Dynerman to name just a handful.
