There are two Northbrook condominium buildings in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood, appropriately titled Northbrook I and II. The look-alike sister buildings are each home to 59 residences and sit side-by-side along 16th Street between Meridian Place and Newton Street. Built by the legendary Harry Wardman in 1918, the six-story structures with their impressive Beaux-Arts architecture were originally apartment buildings, but were eventually renovated and converted to charming condo units. The landmark buildings are listed in James Goode’s notable book, “Best Addresses: A Century of Washington’s Distinguished Apartment Houses.”
The combined 118 residences between the two sandstone structures come in an array of one and two-bedroom layouts, with roomy floorplans that range from around 585 to over 1,850 square feet. Penthouses at the top level are especially spacious and airy, with some enjoying sunny exposures on three sides, and up to five private terraces. The renovation and conversion process at Northbrook I and II took place some time ago, 1980 to be exact. That process largely centered on preserving vintage architectural details while updating kitchens and baths. The majority of units have been bought and sold more than once since 1980, and it is quite common to find newer remodels. But despite the passage of time, there are certain features that tend to carry forward, such as original honeycomb tiles in the front foyers, elegant moldings, and tall built-ins. Gleaming, classic strip hardwood floors are bathed in natural light from tall windows, and French doors often open out onto private balconies. The original galley kitchens have often been upgraded more than once, and some have been opened up to adjoining rooms. Bathrooms often have an upgraded retro vibe that makes use of original tiling and themes. The pet-friendly buildings each have tiled lobbies, and there is off-street surface parking that is unassigned.
The Northbrook I and II condominiums are about two blocks from Piney Branch Park, which is an extension of the Rock Creek Park system to the north. The sprawling Smithsonian National Zoo is also nearby, and within the same greenbelt that wraps around the neighborhood to the west and north. The Adams Morgan neighborhood lies to the south with Columbia Heights to the east. Mount Pleasant itself has an intimate and diverse appeal with enjoyable bakeries and restaurants along the eponymously Mt Pleasant Street spine, with even more shops and eateries along nearby 14th Street.
