Modern Cooperative Features at River Park Mutual Homes
The eight-story apartment buildings at River Park Mutual Homes have cubist themes complemented by stylish concrete latticework, while the townhouses have barrel-shaped metal roofs reminiscent of the futuristic Googie movement. Floorplans and sizes throughout the complex are quite varied, ranging from studios to one, and two-bedroom single-level apartments, and multilevel townhouses. More than six decades have passed since the completion of this innovative residential community, and it remains as uniquely fascinating now as it was back then.
The mid-century modern River Park Mutual Homes complex has much in common with DC developments like Tiber Island, and Harbour Square, also in the Southwest Waterfront neighborhood, and the iconic Watergate in Foggy Bottom. These were all built during the same period of time and shared common influences as well as a vision for a new transitional period in the nation’s capital. City planners worked hand-in-glove with Goodman, and other notable modernists and urban planners such as I.M. Pei, Chloetheil Woodward Smith, and the team of Lethbridge, Keyes, and Condon. These prominent architects often collaborated on both residential and commercial properties throughout the Washington Metro region, from government buildings to condos and co-ops, single-family homes, and even entire neighborhoods.
As with the other condos and cooperative developments from this era, the units at River Park Mutual Homes have often gone through changes, renovations, and remodels over the years, whether common upgrades by management or makeovers from individual owners. As a result, you’ll find everything from kitschy original parquet floors and galley kitchens to new open space layouts with modern gourmet cooking spaces and luxe bathrooms. Residents at the gated community enjoy a plethora of full service amenities, including multiple swimming pools, a fitness center, front desk and staff including concierge service, community rooms, courtyards, a playground, and even that most 1960s thing of all, a woodworking shop. The complex is just a couple blocks from the water, and also close to Southwest Waterfront Park, and major league baseball at Nationals Park.
