The Wisteria Mansion Condominium - Luxury Historic Condos in Washington, DC

Modern LiVing at the Historic Wisteria Mansion Condominium in Logan Circle, Washington, DC

With its stately presence at 1101 L Street NW, Washington, DC 20005, Wisteria Mansion is a historic condominium building in the Logan Circle neighborhood. Built in 1926 and later converted to condo usage, the eight-story Beaux-Arts classic with its intricate detail work is certainly emblematic of a more graceful era. However, the historic building isn’t actually a former mansion, but simply named for the Civil War era Wisteria House that once stood at the address. That grand property with its imported Chinese wisteria trees was demolished in 1924. The Wisteria Mansion Apartments was built in its place, with the original trees remaining. Today, the Logan Circle property is home to 71 condo units.

Modern Condo Features at Wisteria Mansion

The 71 residences at Wisteria Mansion are spread out over eight levels. While the building with its white concrete segueing to brown brick doesn’t look particularly large from the front, it extends back along 11th Street due to the generous depth of the original lot. Condos are primarily either studios or one-bedroom layouts, with sizes ranging from approximately 407 to 724 square feet of charming living space. This part of Logan Circle is also associated with Mount Vernon Square and Downtown DC. Other historic buildings that have been converted to condos or co-ops in this area include the Zenith, Barclay North, the Willison, and the DeSoto.

The lovely old Wisteria Mansion building presents beautifully from the street, with lush front lawns and gardens including blossoming plantings and the original wisteria trees, now well over a century old. Ornate exterior bas relief at the lower levels, as well pillars and a portico welcome visitors and residents inside to an equally impressive marble lobby. The apartments were renovated at the time of the condo conversion in 1984, but many have been further remodeled since then by individual owners. You’ll typically find hardwood floors, high ceilings, and vintage details such as built-ins and antique glass doorknobs. The old radiators still exist and do their job admirably, and the walls are genuine plaster. The gourmet kitchens have sometimes been partially opened up to adjacent living areas in inventive ways, and the bathrooms offer a nice blend of Old World style and newer luxury finishes.

The building has a lobby, a bike room, a shared laundry with front-loading machines, and optional extra storage. The location is also worth mentioning, at the southern part of Logan Circle and also overlapping with Mount Vernon Square and Downtown. This means a proximity to local greenspaces like Samuel Gompers Memorial Park and the larger Franklin Park, with the world-famous National Mall about eight blocks to the south. The Mount Vernon Square Metro Station is just three blocks away. Nearby grocery stores include Safeway and Streets Market, with Whole Foods further to the north in the heart of Logan Circle. There’s lots of great restaurants in all directions, including Union Kitchen, Unconventional Diner, Michele's, Supra, and the Delegate, just to name a few. You’ll also find great museums, shops, and countless Washington, DC attractions.
