Modern Condo Features at the Historic Yale Steam Laundry
Built in 1902, the three-story laundry with its towering 120 foot smokestack was designed in the Italian Renaissance Revival style by Thomas Francis Jr. Additional outbuildings were added in the 1920s. The plant became a familiar sight, serving not only the White House, but Congress, local hotels, and individual citizens alike until its closure in 1976. The original structures were listed on the National Register of Historic Places some two decades later, thus saving them from the wrecking ball. Developer Scott Fuller ultimately stepped in with architect John Ronan, restoring and renovating the old buildings and adding a connected modern glass and steel tower. The project was completed in 2008. Other condo buildings in the Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood include City Center, 555 Mass, and Sonata.
Driving along New York Avenue, the Yale Steam Laundry with its circular front drive offers a fascinating juxtaposition of architectural styles and eras. The earliest building with its limestone detailing is slightly different then the blocky two-story structures with their large industrial windows, while the new 12-story tower with its slightly rippled façade is perched behind, looming over the older structures. There are 16 loft -style condos in the old laundry and 133 flats in the new tower. There are obvious differences between the old and new buildings. You’ll find exposed brick walls, coffered ceilings, and all sorts of fun and quirky details in the old laundry plant, together with new gourmet kitchens and other luxury details. The tower flats offer more of a modern ambience overall, but also feature factory style windows.
With its connecting brick walkways and clever combinations of old and new, the Yale Steam Laundry has plenty of upscale amenities for its residents. There is a 24/7 front desk, concierge service, a rooftop deck and lounge with a lap pool, a club room with billiards, secure parking, extra storage, and a cavernous and very well-equipped fitness center with old, exposed laundry ductwork overhead. The neighborhood is also part of the allure, right in the heart of Washington, DC’s vibrant downtown area and next-door to Chinatown and Penn Quarter. There’s a Safeway right across the street, multiple nearby Metro stations, theaters, landmarks, museums, and more bars, restaurants, and coffeeshops than you could begin to count. Who knew more than a century ago, that a steam laundry would one day be a favorite place to live?
