Modern Co-op Features at the Historic Altamont

Located in the Kalorama neighborhood and quite close to next-door Adams Morgan, the Altamont was completed in 1916 to great fanfare as one of the District’s grand residential buildings, with 27 oversized apartments. In 1949, the apartments were converted into 50 cooperative units ranging from studios to three bedrooms. Despite the fact that there are now nearly twice as many residences as there were in the building’s original era, floorplans can still be quite spacious. Two and three-bedroom units can exceed 2,000 square feet. The building had a makeover in 2014 with numerous updates to the common areas.

Residents at the Altamont have remodeled their individual cooperative units over the years, with some luxurious and modern results. That said, a large number of apartments have retained their original charm with lovely hardwood floors, high ceilings, built-ins, fireplaces, and French interior doorways. The kitchens are almost always renovated, with some still having a galley appearance and others with walls that have been removed for a more open feel.

One of the most desirable coop buildings in Kalorama, the Altamont at 1901 Wyoming Avenue offers a number of amenities to its residences. There is an incredible front lobby with herringbone floors, a domed ceiling, mosaic tile floors and a 24-hour staffed desk with concierge service. The reception room features herringbone floors, tiled ceilings with exquisite relief, and a fireplace with scrolled embellishments. The rooftop deck displays expansive cityscape views. There is also laundry, a party room, and parking for many of the units, with a waitlist for others. Located at the corner of Wyoming Ave and Columbia Road, the Altamont is within walking distance of the Woodley Park and Dupont Circle Metro stations.
