The Broadmoor, like many historic buildings that have been renovated over the years, offers an intriguing blend of tradition and modernity. You’ll often find newer hardwood floors, portions of walls that have been opened up for enhanced space and light, and nicely appointed gourmet kitchens with stone counters and stainless steel appliances. But interior design is up to individual owners, which means there’s lots of variety from one unit to the next. It served as a grand apartment building for Washington’s elite for decades and was originally home to 179 rental residences along with a number of hotel rooms. Featured in James M. Goode’s Best Addresses, the building converted to cooperative ownership in 1948 with 194 residences across nine levels. Co-ops range from studio to two-bedroom, two-bath layouts, with sizes up to 1,750 square feet. The unusual exterior facades with their bays and corners have resulted in a wide assortment of interior designs and layouts. These are no cookie cutter shoebox apartments. Instead, you’ll find wonderfully organic floorplans with inner hallways, built-ins, French doors, fun nooks, sunporches and more.
With long driveways extending from both Connecticut Avenue and Porter Street, the Broadmoor is set well back from busy traffic. The building was one of the first in the area to be constructed with an underground parking garage, this during the era of Duesenbergs and Cadillac touring sedans. Today, the bonus of assigned parking in the nation’s capital is more popular than ever. Residents also enjoy a huge lobby wit a 24-hour, staffed front desk, a fitness room, community rooms including one with the original Art Deco Bar, a number of different activity rooms including a library and card room, laundry facilities, guest bedrooms, a bike room, and truly impressive surrounding grounds that include an herb garden, lounging areas, and lawns that seem to stretch on forever.
