More About Salona Village, McLean, Virginia
This idyllic neighborhood dates back to a stately brick planation house on land that was homesteaded around the turn of the 19th century. The large farm home was later the site of a Union General s headquarters. It still stands today, preserved through a Fairfax County easement. Widespread resident development in the area was slow to follow, however, with a sprinkling of homes built during the 1920s through to the early 1940s. These were often Craftsman-style, Queen Anne farmhouses, or classic Colonials. The early 1950s saw a new era of construction in the area, continuing through to the 1970s. More recently, home building has accelerated once again, although typically in the form of add-ons, remodels, or teardowns that are replaced with larger and more extravagant footprints.
As a result of the lengthy timeline, there is a wide variety of architectural styles in Salona Village, with the various designs mentioned above as well as Ramblers, Cape Cods, Arts & Crafts, and various custom builds including palatial estates with stone exteriors and a European feel. As with other parts of McLean, you ll also find a fair share of modernist structures, including those by noted architects. Lot sizes are often generous, and terrain in the neighborhood can be quite verdant with stands of trees, meadows, and parks including Pimmit Run Stream Valley Park and Pimmit Bend Park.
The Salona Village of today surrounds the original farmhouse property and its considerable acreage including three large meadows. A portion of the old homestead land is being repurposed by Fairfax County planners into recreation use for the enjoyment of residents. The village is roughly bound by Dolly Madison Blvd to the north, Chain Bridge Road to the west, and Pimmit Run to the south. The village extends almost as far as Old Dominion Drive to the southwest. That means that it s close to McLean s downtown hub, including popular bakeries, restaurants, and grocery stores such as Parsa Bakery, Greenberry s Coffee, Sweet Leaf, Caf Tatti, Capri Ristorante, Listrani s, Rocco s, Tachibana, Rashad Gourmet, Safeway, Balducci s, and others.
