Luxury Homes in Bannockburn, Bethesda MD

In Bannockburn, also associated with Bannockburn Estates and Bannockburn Heights, the lifestyle is relaxed, inclusive, and upscale at the same time. Locals have often said that is less a place, than it is a state of mind. Located just north of Glen Echo and east of Cabin John, the community is known for its lovely homes and its proximity to both Bethesda and Washington, DC. Homes for sale in the area are usually large, attractive, and upscale without being overly ostentatious.

According to local historians, the origins of the Bannockburn community were utopian in nature. During the mid-1940s, a group of residents in the area with socialist ideals banded together and purchased the Bannockburn Golf Club, a 124-acre property that may have been the first public course in the region. The lush course with its grand Tudor clubhouse had first opened around 1897. But the new buyers had something else in mind, the establishment of a cooperative community where a free, quality education and affordable housing could be had by all that desired it. Those lofty plans never quite panned out, and the cooperative organization eventually began selling parcels of land to residential developers. But the original generosity of spirit has endured, and Bannockburn residents still relish their neighborhood’s unique history.

More About Bannockburn, Bethesda, Maryland

Luxury homes for sale in Bannockburn have a range of styles, ages, and price points. There are large, older homes that predate the mid-1940s purchase of the golf club and the subsequent periodic waves of development. The historic properties can be found in traditional Colonials, Queen Anne, and other popular architecture of the day. As decades rolled on, homes were built in the styles favored by individual developers including brick Tudor, Cape Cod, and Rambler among others. Newer homes include Arts and Crafts, and contemporary custom versions of earlier traditional construction. It all adds up to a pleasantly varied menu of properties that still stays within the upscale norms that buyers come to expect in both Montgomery County and neighboring Washington, DC. There have been attempts in recent years to develop condominiums but those have been largely rebuffed.

Residents of Bannockburn, including the Bannockburn Estates and Bannockburn Heights subdivisions, take pride in their neighborhood’s history.
