Modern Condo Features at Historic Pierce School
After standing vacant for decades, the red brick Pierce School with its distinctive corner turrets fell into disrepair. In 2000, the old schoolhouse was purchased from the District by developers Jeff Printz and Chris Swanson for the sum of $275,000. The developers then spent $3.5 million turning it into high end rental apartments. In 2012, the Pierce School was converted from rentals to condos, along with further renovations. Today, it is reminder of the H Street Corridor’s vital history, even as the neighborhood continues to evolve. Other condos in the neighborhood include Constellation on H, the Maryland, and Pullman Place.
Condos at the Pierce School come in both single and multilevel styles, offering an industrial-chic vibe with soaring ceilings, exposed brick walls and exposed overhead ductwork. Some of the one-bedrooms are quite large, with floating stairs leading up to true lofts. The restoration process was very detailed, resulting in restored original hardwood floors and old schoolhouse features such as chalk boards, long hanging lights, and large, deep-set windows. The kitchens are state of the art with all the modern bells and whistles, while the bathrooms are a true revelation, incorporating claw foot deep soaking tubs and elongated tray vanities that evoke the school restrooms of old. Most of the residences have some sort of private outdoor space. Some units have wood-burning fireplaces. And while it is rare for a boutique condominium with so few units to also have extra amenities, residents at the pet-friendly building enjoy a black-bottomed swimming pool to the rear of the school, a wonderful roof deck with lounging furniture, a well-equipped fitness center with exposed brick walls, and a movie theater with deep leather recliners.
The Pierce School is located at 1375 Maryland Avenue NE, right where Maryland Ave branches onto G Street, and at the corner of 14th Street. It’s a leafy, residential part of the urban neighborhood, yet just a block from H Street and the Atlas Performing Arts Center. This is a neighborhood in flux, with new businesses such as a Whole Foods Market moving into the spot formerly inhabited by Murry’s Food Store. Yet for all the changes, there are still numerous historic buildings along H Street, including those that are home to indie businesses, from thrift stores to art galleries. The “Main Street” charm extends to the recently completed H Street Trolley which is part of the DC Streetcar system with free fares for passengers. It’s all part of the vibrant H Street Corridor experience.
