Modern Condo Features at the Historic Somerset House

The classic U-shaped structure on 16th Street was developed by Harry Wardman and completed in 1917 with a grand Beaux Arts design, including two wings, projecting front bays, curved inner corners, and a set-back entrance with separate in and out doorways. The seven story apartment building was purchased by the Tenacity Group in 2014 and converted to 84 condo units in a variety of sizes.

The transformation from the landmark Somerset House apartment building to today’s popular condominium meant preserving and/or restoring many of the original features while upgrading the infrastructure including windows, wiring, plumbing, HVAC systems, and more. One of the major renovations was the vintage black and white marble tiled lobby with Art Deco hanging lamps and wall sconces, and a unique marble and leather front desk. The condos themselves come in many different sizes, from micro studio units with around 300 square feet of living space, all the way up to three bedrooms, 2.5 baths and approximately 1,950 feet of space.

Great care was taken to retain the historic sense of grace and charm at the landmark building. That included restoring the original red oak floors as well as faithfully preserving millwork and the various nooks and bays. On the other hand, the gourmet kitchens are completely new, combining modernity with timeless style. The counters are marble, with custom cabinetry, and upscale appliances including Fisher & Paykal, and Bosch. Similarly, the bathrooms also feature marble countertops, cabinetry that matches the kitchens, and frameless showers. In-unit washers and dryers are standard.

In addition to the stunning lobby with its staffed front desk, the building has a fitness center, storage lockers, a bike room, and a large laundry room for those days when you need more than one machine. Another intriguing feature is a giant, air-conditioned community room with distinctly different portions, including a lounge area, a media/screening area, and a wine room area with seating and a table for wine tasting. Somerset House enjoys a prime location in the heart of Dupont Circle, strolling distance to top bars and restaurants, including Ted’s Bulletin, Le Diplomate, Agora DC, and so many others.
