Modern Condo Features at the Historic Columbia

By the end of the Civil War, scores of wounded soldiers had been shipped to the nation’s capital for treatment. Large numbers of women also arrived, searching for loved ones. With female healthcare sorely lacking, the Columbia Hospital for Women and Lying-In Asylum was founded at the Hill Mansion in Thomas Circle. The fledgling facility moved to the West End neighborhood in 1870 and was rebuilt on a larger scale in 1916 with a memorable Italianate design from Nathan C. Wyeth. One of the nation’s preeminent women’s hospitals, the Columbia closed in 2002, and was redeveloped as luxury condos in 2006 with two new wings complementing the original hospital structure.

Residences at the Columbia offer Great Room concepts that bring living, dining, and cooking together in one airy space, while still including front hallways as well as secondary hallways leading to bedroom suites. Loft-style dens or bedrooms are quite common, adding to convenient work-from-home possibilities. The resulting layouts feel organic and homey, without reverting to the linear shoebox shapes that can be so common today. Most units have private outdoor spaces of some sort, ranging from patios to balconies to rooftop decks. You’ll find interesting architectural details, plantation shutters, custom closet organizers, marble baths, in-unit washer/dryers, and upscale kitchen features that typically feature granite counters, breakfast bars with pendant lighting, and Viking and SubZero appliances.

In addition to the highly popular on-site Trader Joe’s, condo owners at the Columbia enjoy a fully staffed and friendly front desk with concierge service, a rooftop swimming pool and lounge area, a fitness center, a clubroom, billiards, parking, extra storage, and furnished guest suites for visitors. There are numerous coffee shops, bakeries, and restaurants within a block or two, including Starbucks, Uptowner Café, Bluestone Café West End, Blue Duck Tavern, and Marcel’s by Robert Wiedmaier, to name a few. You can also stroll to the new West End Library, Francis Park, and the Rock Creek Trail.
