Classic and Modern Condo Features at the Portsmouth

The Portsmouth was originally built as an upper class apartment house and is listed in James Goode’s “Best Addresses.” The landmark building was renovated and converted to condominium usage in 1981, with 33 residences in a variety of one and two-bedroom floorplans, ranging in size from around 570 to 1,250 square feet. Other historic condo and co-op buildings in the neighborhood include the Northumberland, the Cairo, the Avondale, and the Analoston.

Stepping through the Portsmouth’s two sets of double doors feels a bit like time travel, with marble stairs and walls, and a lovely lobby with terrazzo tile and original mailboxes. The hallways are just as ornate, with red doors opening into the luxury flats with their beautiful hardwood floors, built-ins, fireplaces, and in some cases, interior pillars. There are certainly some nods to the modern age. After all, this building is more than a century old. But even the upgraded kitchens with stone counters and other bells and whistles still retain some charming original details, as do the bathrooms with combinations of vintage tile and new counters and designer fixtures that often have a classic flavor. Many of the units have been remodeled to some extent by individual owners, but by and large, these condos offer a tasteful combination of new and old.

Residents at the pet-friendly building enjoy extra storage, an elevator, a bike room, and a shared fenced patio. The Portsmouth is on a tree-lined street in a very walkable area, close to multiple neighborhood parks, Dupont Market with its great deli, Freedom Market, Café Chino for morning coffee, and the Spooky Action Theater for imaginative performance art. Nearby restaurants include Lauriol Plaza, Anju, Dupont Italian Kitchen, and Annie’s Paramount Steak House. The Dupont Circle Metro Station with its Red Line service is about a half dozen blocks away.
