Modern Co-op Features at 3900 Watson Place

At the time of its construction, 3900 Watson Place was sometimes looked at askance by its next-door neighbors at the Westchester, a five-building complex dating to 1931 with looming Moorish facades. After all, the sprawling landscape now had to be shared. Additionally, the cubist Watson Place structures with their clean lines and huge windows looked quite different. But this was a new era in architecture and lifestyles, and the developers of Watson Place were eager to market their new city residences to a post-War populace eager for change and convenience. The sales pamphlet touted the new modernity with snappy catch phrases such as “outstanding innovations in the scientifically coordinated Hot Point electric kitchens.”

There have been a number of renovations at Watson Place, including an extensive makeover around 2010 that included the lobby, hallways, doors, new elevators with textured glass panels, and other common property. The units themselves range from one to four bedrooms, and from about 800 to over 2,600 square feet. Many still have the original parquet floors while others have been remodeled with newer plank hardwood floors. Original modernist concepts such as extra-wide windows in connected series, and clean linear room angles are often complemented by revamped gourmet kitchens and updated baths. Most of the units have rectangular balconies, often looking out over the verdant, leafy grounds.
