Modern Co-op Features at the Historic Westchester

The 500 co-ops at Westchester range from studio efficiencies to four-bedroom layouts. Sizes are equally varied, starting around 575 square feet and climbing all the way to 3,800 square feet for a rare residence that is the result of four apartment being combined into one. The interiors can be vastly different from one unit to the next. Original parquet hardwood floors are still in evidence in some cases, while other residences have been renovated with newer wide-plank flooring. You’ll also find lovely old millwork, built-ins, archways, bays, and in some cases, sunken living rooms.

Developed by Gustave Ring, the Westchester was originally intended to be Washington’s largest apartment complex. However, the advent of the Great Depression threw a monkey wrench into the proceedings. The 1929 plans for a 1,000-unit project were scaled back, and the I-shaped buildings with their Neo-Gothic design wound up housing 556 residences. Today, the number of co-ops is even less, due to units being combined. The brick and limestone edifices loom above a hilltop location, with a long front drive and a massive piece of land with great lawns, stands of trees, and outbuildings, all combining for an imposing fortress like feel.

Although there are five buildings on the property, the main residential addresses are 3900 and 4000 Cathedral Avenue. Residents enjoy a number of full service amenities that give the cooperative complex the feeling of its own self-contained neighborhood. There is a grand Main Lobby that hosts a concert series, an onsite grocery store with specialty and gourmet items that can be delivered to your door, the popular DeCarlo’s Restaurant, a large fitness center, a barber shop for men, a beauty salon for women, a dry cleaners, a library with over 6,000 volumes, valet service, and more than 10 acres of lush grounds including a three-level sunken garden. But while there are picturesque fountains, there is no swimming pool. Perhaps that was one of features that was tossed aside when the original 28-acre development was truncated. Regardless, Westchester is a fascinating time capsule and a very swanky place to live.
