Modern Co-op Features at Harbour Square

With lush landscaping, cherry blossoms, and giant reflecting pools, the Harbour Square community represents a fascinating cross section of Washington’s different eras of development and redevelopment. The Wheat Row townhouses are among the oldest residential buildings in the District. The large cubist Harbour Square buildings were designed by pioneering female architect Chloetheil Woodward Smith and were part of a massive waterfront makeover during the 1960s and 1970s. Adding to all of that, the development is next door to The Wharf, representing Washington’s newest transformational overhaul, including new luxury high-rise condo towers like VIO and Amaris.

Cooperative residences at Harbour Square come in a variety of floorplans from studios to three bedrooms, and from about 500 to nearly 2,000 square feet in size. Original parquet floors, full height windows, and private balconies are common. You’ll also find many units that have been fully remodeled with all the latest modern features. Residents enjoy numerous amenities such as a recently renovated giant indoor heated swimming pool, a large and well-equipped fitness center, roof decks, a club room with a full kitchen, a hobby shop for craft projects, business meeting rooms with WiFi, a library, 24/7 gatehouse services, extra storage, a dog washing station, an electric car charging station, a car wash station, outdoor grills, and lounging areas. The grounds are also quite noteworthy, designed by landscape architect David Urban Kiley, and featuring a massive lawn for picnics, badminton, and croquet, along with the one-acre water garden, and even a wooded area.

The Harbour Square buildings are found from 510 to 560 N Street NW, at the end of a cul-de-sac and fronted by trees and other greenery. The buildings are across the street from the Tibor Island cooperative homes, and next-door to the River Park Mutual Homes with their distinctive barrel-shaped metal roofs. Waterfront Tower, and the Riverside condominium buildings are also in the same area, with all the various structures from the midcentury era interwoven by interlinking roads and greenbelts. In addition to Woodward Smith, prominent architects involved with the massive Southwest Waterfront remake included I.M. Pei, Charles Goodman, Donald Lethbridge, Arthur Keyes, and David Condon.
