Modern Co-op Features at the Historic Dumbarton Court Cooperative
Floorplans at the Georgetown cooperative range from studios to three bedrooms and from around 365 to 1,600 square feet in size. There are also some penthouse residences that are the result of two apartments being combined into one. The building was nicely renovated in 2012, resulting in a seamless combination of old and new, while still faithfully adhering to the charm of a historic structure that is more than a century old. Depending on the unit, features can include lovely heart of pine floors, original built-ins, fireplaces with impressive mantels, French doors leading into bedrooms, and kitchens that have been updated with stone counters and stainless steel appliances.
The renovation process at this sun-dappled garden courtyard building resulted in a fascinating blend of shapes and sizes for the co-op apartments inside. Micro-studios have a surprisingly spacious feel, due to custom full height cabinetry and Murphy beds, making the most out of the square footage. On the other hand, the larger units retain fun little nooks and spaces, that add a whimsical sense of style. The bathrooms have been nicely remodeled with white stone countertops, and in some cases, frameless showers and/or deep soaking oval clawfoot tubs. Some of the lower level apartments have their own outdoor patios.
Cooperatives differ from condominiums in some significant ways. A potential buyer at a co-op building actually purchases a share of the organization that owns the building, and can then live in the apartment that was “for sale.” Condo ownership is somewhat simpler in that the buyer simply purchases the chosen unit. Common amenities at Dumbarton Court include concierge services, landscaped gardens, a huge back lawn, a grilling patio, extra storage, a bike room, and a modern laundry room. Not all of the co-ops have in-unit washer/dryers, and board permission is required to install laundry hookup. Cats are allowed, but dogs are not. The building is on a coveted East Village block, steps from several parks including Montrose, Rock Creek, Tudor Place, and Dumbarton Oaks.
