Bob Herrema was a former Capitol Hill staffer who renovated his own dilapidated row house, and subsequently embarked on a larger journey of home restorations and condo conversions. Together with architect Bob Schwartz, the former chief of staff to Senator Lowell Weiker was responsible for approximately 30 projects, including the Logan School, Grace Church, and the Carbery School. The idea of saving abandoned old properties and transforming them into luxury condos replete with high ceilings and lots of natural light, struck a chord with potential buyers during a time when Washington was in the early stages of a real estate renaissance. The former schoolhouse on Capitol Hill was built by Washington, DC’s Office of the Building Inspector circa 1887. It served as a school until 1949, and then became a warehouse for a period of time. The building eventually became vacant and blighted and was taken over by the Department of Administrative Services. Herrema was able to acquire the building as a historic preservation project, using a tax credit program to rehab it and turn it into condos with an intriguing variety of floorplans. The three-story structure has a recessed center pavilion, along with giant arched windows and corner roof gables that allow for interior vaulted ceilings in some top floor units.

With layouts ranging from around 685 to 1,300 square feet, the residences at Carbery Lofts feature an attractive combination of new and old. Original restored pine floors, built-ins, charming nooks, and wood-burning fireplaces merge with soaring ceilings, and open gourmet kitchens with stone counters and stainless steel appliances. Many of the units also have dens, as well as private outdoor spaces, from ground level brick patios to rear facing balconies. Most, but not all units are loft designs, often featuring bedrooms with an open wall overlooking the lower levels.
