Modern and Historic Condo Features at Masonry Lofts

The unusual tale of the Mansory Lofts in the City of Virginia doesn’t end with spindles and looms powered by steam engines. During the Civil War the building was confiscated and turned into a military prison for both Union and Confederate soldiers. Later uses include a beer bottling house, and even a manufacturing facility for spark plugs. Today, the large Georgian-style structure contains 25 upscale residences with industrial chic interiors. The revamping came courtesy of developer CAS Riegler and the Cooper Carry architectural firm. The ultimate combination of ancient, exposed wood and brick, and new modernist features and finishes, is both unique and completely charming.

From the street, the white brick building with its front portico doesn’t really look like it would be home to hipster lofts. But step inside one of the residences and it will feel like a transformative experience. These condos have a very authentic vibe, and the old vintage details such as exposed beams and brick have been left in a fairly raw state, contrasting wonderfully with newer and sleeker finishes, such as the Euro-style kitchens that hug the walls with their glossy white cabinetry and upscale stainless steel appliances. Not all the units are true lofts, but each residence still possesses the charm of old and new elements, combining to form something memorable. The boutique condominium is pet-friendly, with a community room at the top level. There is also parking, and a small onsite park.

The Masonry Lofts are located at 515 N. Washington Street near the corner of Pendleton Street. The small Portner Park is right next-door. Washington Street is the leafy residential section of what is also known as George Washington Memorial Parkway. The location is quite desirable, with numerous historic row houses and homes, and local businesses including a Trader Joe’s market that is just steps away. There’s also a nearby Harris Teeter, and numerous bars, restaurants, coffeehouses, art galleries, and museums. Founders Park, Oronoco Bay Park, and the Potomac River are within walking distance, about five blocks away.
