The unusual tale of the Mansory Lofts in the City of Virginia doesn’t end with spindles and looms powered by steam engines. During the Civil War the building was confiscated and turned into a military prison for both Union and Confederate soldiers. Later uses include a beer bottling house, and even a manufacturing facility for spark plugs. Today, the large Georgian-style structure contains 25 upscale residences with industrial chic interiors. From the street, the white brick building with its front portico doesn’t really look like it would be home to hipster lofts. But step inside one of the residences and it will feel like a transformative experience.
