It's one of the most common questions that prospective condo shoppers ask of real estate agents. Does a particular unit have its own balcony, or is there a private outdoor space of any kind? This is especially true in urban environments, and it’s easy to understand why. A recent government study showed that access to both public and private greenspaces was beneficial to people’s health and happiness. But we don’t need a research paper to confirm obvious truths. Some balconies are fairly small, and often described as Juliet balconies, named for the small platform on which Shakepeare’s heroine stands as she calls out for her Romeo. And then there are the truly impressive sweeping terraces with amazing views of the Potomac River at places like the iconic midcentury modern Watergate in Foggy Bottom or the skyscraping Turnberry Tower in Arlington’s Rosslyn community.
Private spaces don’t have to have birds’ nest views in order to be soothing and satisfying. Take the case of ground level patios, whether open to sunny lawns or surrounded by fencing or walls in order to provide a welcome sense of sanctuary. A patio can also be a wonderful place to barbecue and enjoy outdoor get-togethers with friends. But there is also nothing that quite compares to that pinnacle of upscale living, a penthouse with its own private roof deck. Here you can have it all, with panoramic vistas, and glittering evening social events.
When it comes right down to it, a space outside four walls can be a wonderful thing, no matter whether its small and intimate or big enough to host a fundraiser. From morning coffee to evening libations, or when you just want to sit and chill, condominiums and cooperatives with balconies, terraces, patios, and decks, are a nice treat.
