Luxury Homes With Swimming Pools

In the Washington Metropolitan area, luxury homes with swimming pools are making a comeback. Once a common perk for homeowners who could afford it, backyard watering holes began falling out of style in the later stages of the twentieth century. That trend is starting to reverse once again. Of course, it helps to have a large enough property to support a summertime favorite.

More About Luxury Homes with Pools in Washington Metro

To a large degree, homes with swimming pools are a suburban luxury. This has always been the case, historically speaking. But that doesn’t mean that residents of the District with its many densely populated urban neighborhoods, are precluded from splashing around.

After all, there are plenty of quiet residential communities in the nation’s capital, especially in the Northwest quadrant. Homes with existing pools can be found in neighborhoods like Wesley Heights, Massachusetts Avenue Heights, Forest Hills, Kalorama, Kent, and many more. It is also worth pointing out that contractors and landscapers in the DC Metro area have seen an uptick for new pool installations in recent years.

Moving beyond DC itself, luxury homes with swimming pools turn up in increasing numbers in parts of Northern Virginia and Maryland. It’s not at all surprising, given the propensity for larger property lots in some of Washington Metro’s most affluent suburbs. Such is the case in McLean, Great Falls, Bethesda, Potomac, and Chevy Chase, all of which are highly popular enclaves known for extravagant properties and a relatively short commute to the nation’s capital. As you head out to the country, serene and spacious communities such as Upperville, Leesburg, and Middleburg are known for their sprawling estates and amenities like tennis courts and pools.

The history of private swimming pools in American dates back to the late 19th century, with the Vanderbilt estate in North Carolina being one of the first to break ground in 1895. In 1911, prominent businessman Edward Everett built a marble basement pool along with a bowling alley in gym, in his now demolished Washington, DC mansion.

But it wasn’t until the 1950s that the swimming pool craze really took hold, and by the 1960s and 1970s, backyard pools were a staple part of popular culture. TV shows, movies, and advertisements often featured pools as essential reminders of the achievable American dream. From the ubiquitous kidney-shaped pools that dotted outdoor suburban landscapes to the more elite ideal of heated indoor pools, these splashy accoutrements seemed synonymous with our nation’s golden age.

After a brief lull during which many homeowners preferred maximizing available outdoor space over singular luxuries, the swimming pool trend has come back in force. According to recent statistics from the Pool and Hot Tub Alliance trade group, there are currently around 10.4 million residential swimming pools in our nation. That is a staggering number! It won’t come as any surprise that the largest number of pools are found in states like California and Texas, where the climate is more temperate throughout the year. But those living in four season areas are also eager to dip their toes in the water when summer rolls around again. There are an estimated 250,000 pools in DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
